**Arrest Made in Jacksonville Murder Case**

Santos Saleem Herring, a 24-year-old male, has been arrested for Second-Degree Murder following an investigation into the death of 22-year-old Derrick Byron Nicholls. The incident occurred on Saturday, May 18, 2024, when the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office (JSO) responded to a report of a vehicle found off the roadway at the Interstate 295 and Interstate 10 interchange.

Upon arrival, officers discovered Nicholls in the driver’s seat of the vehicle, appearing to suffer from a gunshot wound. He was transported to a local hospital, where he was later pronounced deceased.

JSO’s Homicide Unit and Crime Scene Unit, along with assistance from the State Attorney’s Office, conducted an investigation that led to the identification of Herring as a suspect based on the evidence collected. Herring was already incarcerated at the Pre-Trial Detention Facility on unrelated charges at the time the arrest warrant was served.

The investigation is ongoing, and detectives are looking to identify any additional suspects involved. Anyone with information related to this case is encouraged to contact the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office at 904-630-0500.
